What are the most common problems of people with back pain?

The most common problems of people who use the services of the MOVEba center and have back problems manifest themselves in pain in the lumbar (lower) part of the spine, in the cervical (neck) part of the spine as well as in the thoracic (central) part of the spine. These pains are mainly caused by functional changes in the muscle structures around the vertebrae, due to prolonged sitting in static positions, followed by postural irregularities that occur as a result of the sedentary habits of modern man. However, pain can also occur due to stress, manifesting itself in a certain part of the back. As a result of stress, among other things, there is a tightening of the fascia (elastic tissue that surrounds our entire body), which leads to tension in the muscles and around the joints,

When do these problems begin to significantly affect the overall quality of life?

Pain changes everything

Pain can affect motor control in unpredictable ways. It often occurs when applying a bad training program as well as incorrectly performed exercises. The most common mistake when solving such problems is to work on removing the pain locally, until the pain disappears, or until the pain reaches minimum levels. This mainly happens due to the lack of assessment of the functionality of the movement. The presence of pain within just one movement pattern can completely affect the body’s changes in movement. If there is pain, strategies that incorporate standard physiological principles and laws to improve movement no longer apply. Also, the presence of pain causes adaptive changes in movement that cannot be predicted and are always individual. It is impossible to predict the movements of each individual system caused by painful sensations. Dysfunctional patterns of movement and those caused by pain during the performance of that movement prevent authentic movement and the development of strength, endurance and flexibility within a constant framework of movement. The way we relate to painful movement patterns is very different from the dysfunctional patterns that can exist without pain.

Pain is masked by various methods and strategies, with the help of which the body seeks a way to avoid pain through compensatory movements. The key thing is connecting with your body and becoming aware of the current state in the system, which is the best prevention. Let’s look at pain as a gas light. A person is able to ignore all the primal signals in the body but, on the other hand, he could never ignore the lit fuel light in the used tank. 1

Pain and emotions

Back pain can often be of an emotional nature. We define stress as a set of physical and psychological changes that occur when external and internal factors (stressors) disrupt homeostasis, i.e. physiological balance of the organism. Fear, anxiety, worry, sadness and anger often manifest as back pain. Chronic stress often leads to systemic inflammation, which is especially present in the digestive system, which is in direct contact with the spinal column through fascial and ligamentous connections. Thus, very often the inflammatory process that simmers in the intestines and goes unnoticed, manifests itself in back pain, the symptoms of which are almost identical to “degenerative” changes in the spine.

Postoperative conditions

There are many factors that cause pain, but the primary three factors are as follows: poor nerve development, trauma or injury, and learned movement patterns. Learned movement patterns are adopted throughout life and include all activities from work habits to tying shoes, as well as learned body posture patterns that have a major impact on future movement patterns. Optimal nervous development is manifested by correct movement patterns and regularity in body posture. dr. Vaclav Vojta, a Czechoslovak neurologist, discovered that one third of children never reach optimal values of central nervous system functioning. Trauma caused by surgery, injury and negative emotions affect the stability and efficiency of movement. The operative procedure always leads to the inhibition of the muscle tissue around which the intervention was performed, as well as to a change in motor control throughout the entire system. What happens is a reflex shortening of the injured area which leads to compensatory changes in the stabilizing movement system.

How can MOVEba help solve these problems?

Diagnosing the problem

In the MOVEba studio, there is a standard “entry” procedure for everyone who is interested in using our content. During your first visit, you will receive all the information about the concept, the way of working and the services we offer, so that together we can come up with a solution that suits your current needs. After establishing the goals, it is necessary to perform functional tests and evaluation of posture (body posture), in order to obtain the necessary information about the current state of the body. Based on the test results, we program your further activities in order to provide a comprehensive service in our holistic center.

Solutions

It is very important to understand that the essence of movement is woven into the fundamental (basic) movements, and it is especially easy to notice the fundamental when observing the movements of newborns. By observing the crawling of a newborn, it can be concluded that it moves its spine while simultaneously fixing and stabilizing the extremities, while most exercises performed in the gym require the complete opposite; fixing the central part of the body so that the extremities move in certain directions.

Motor control

Newborns come into the world with exceptional mobility and modest knowledge of movement. On the other hand, they do not have a stable posture (keeping the body upright is difficult), as well as motor control. There are jerks, facial expressions and response to stimuli as well as reflex movements. Body posture and movement patterns will be built through ontogenetic development – the stages that the newborn’s body goes through in stages. By combining mobility, stability and posture, movement will occur. Although unconscious, newborns spend most of their day practicing movement. It is limited by the possibilities of the developing musculoskeletal system, as well as eating and sleeping habits. These movements are considered very clean, basic. The movement is so basic that they are not even aware that they are exercising. However, one thing is clear; defying gravity, newborns explore the world with their senses,

Fascia

Fascia is a network of connective tissue that permeates the entire body, wrapping every muscle, muscle fiber, nerves, blood vessels and bones. Almost all body functions depend on the good mobility of the fascia, its gliding function and vitality. Fascia has the ability to store and remember physical and psychological traumas and emotions.

Conclusion

Pain is a warning, and should be understood as an alarm system. Long before the onset of chronic or acute pain, there are irregularities in body posture, excessive use of certain muscles ( overuse)  excessive daily stress and inflammatory processes. The main reason for the overexertion of Prof. Pečina et al. 2   consider repeated tissue micro-trauma that has overcome the tissue’s ability to regenerate, whether it is a tendon, ligament, bone, cartilage, muscle or muscle-tendon or tendon-bone transition. Therefore, it is very important to know how to recognize the first signs of overexertion syndrome and the necessary steps when taking preventive or diagnostic measures.

“Before I met Irma, I changed several types of training in search of what would best suit my current needs and lifestyle. I am very happy that I have the opportunity to train at MOVEba because from the very beginning I get exactly what I want: a personalized approach and a trainer who always asks me for feedback and adjusts and builds my schedule based on that. Thanks to this, I feel that I achieve the results I want more easily than ever before, “without breaking down” and exceeding my own capabilities. The goal of training is always that I first understand the exercise before I even start exercising and that I always listen to myself. As a person who went through a sports injury precisely because he did not respect the limits of his own abilities, this is very important to me.”  (Martina)
